I Hate Running
Who can honestly say that they love running? I always hated running. I played many sports growing up: basketball, softball, soccer…etc. My mom started running consistently and slowly increasing her miles. I thought to myself, if she can do it then I can do it. I began running in January of 2014, I joined the local running group “Wilmington Road Runners Club” and by join I mean that I payed the membership fee and followed the group on Facebook. I ran by myself a couple of days a week, and usually ran on the weekends with my mom.
It took 8 months for me to have the courage to go on a group run. It was an easy 4 miles, but I’m sure back then I wouldn’t have called it easy. I will never forget that I had two guys run with and encourage me that day. Little did I now that one of the guys runs a sub 6 minute mile. The Wilmi
ngton Road Runners is a group of people that are encouraging, kind, and genuine. Whether you run a 7 minute mile or a 13 minute mile they will always support and encourage you. That is exactly what I need. Encouragement to be the best version of myself, being healthy, exercising, learning to balance what is important to me.
When I first started running I could barely make it a 1/2 mile without having to stop. I would get so frustrated with myself. I use to run a mile in high school for the Presidential Fitness Test. He had been about 4 year since I was forced to run a mile, but I was an athlete how could I not run a mile without stopping. I used my asthma as an excuse on why I couldn’t run. Slowly but surely my stamina was increasing, my strength was increase. My favorite place to run in Wilmington is the Wrightsville Beach Loop and its about 2.5 miles. One day I finally ran the whole thing without stopping, and I was ecstatic. This was the day that I enjoyed running
