Sisters Getaway

This past weekend my sisters and I decided we want to get away and have some fun. I’ve been dying to go hiking somewhere in North Carolina or South Carolina. I recently discovered http://www.alltrails.com they have hundreds of trails listed in any city or country. You can either type in the specific city you are going to, or if you’re unsure you can search by state. I searched by state, and then I filtered my search to hikes that had at least 3 stars, moderate to hard in difficulty, and that included a lookout or waterfall. I discovered Hanging Rock State Park. It’s about an hour north of Greensboro, NC. A new adventure awaits.

We took advantage of the extra long weekend, and decided to go hiking Sunday. We hit the rode by 6am and got to the state park around 10am. It wasn’t too crowded when we first got there. Finding the park’s information center wasn’t too hard. After getting a map, lathering up in sunscreen, and packing our essentials, we were ready to hit the trails. Most of the trails start near the information center, which was convenient. The first trail was very easy less than a mile one way. We came upon a beautiful waterfall at the end, and no one was there! We took advantage of being the only ones and took in all the beauty.

After hiking back to the information center, we decided to hike the main trail to up to Hanging Rock. The first .5 mile wasn’t bad, but the closer we got the top the tougher the trail became. We had to stop a few times so that my sisters could catch their breath and get their legs moving again. The closer we got to the top the more stairs and rocks we had to climb. I promised my sisters that the view would be worth the hike. I think they agreed when they saw this…

I didn’t realize how much my sisters didn’t like heights, although they were brave enough to sit near the edge for a few pictures. There were close to 2 dozen people taking pictures and eating their lunch, while enjoying the beautiful landscape. We relaxed at the top for about 30 minutes before heading back. Of course the hike back down was much quicker than the hike to top. There were a few other trails that I would have loved to have hiked, but my sisters were a little too tired. Hopefully I can make it back and do some of the harder hikes.

3 Sisters Waterfall Trail

Woke up at 3:30 am East Coast time, boarded the plane at 4:45, and I was California bound once again. I arrived in San Diego at 9:30 am Pacific Time, and Zach and I were already trying to figure out what adventure to begin next. Our love for hiking has grown so much since he has moved here. He told me about this of this “off the path” trail with a waterfall that he had heard about. I love waterfalls and being from the east coast that’s all my family did on vacations when I was growing up… hiking to waterfalls. The hike was called 3 Sisters Waterfall Trail, so Zach, Brad (Zach’s brother), and I got ready and set off on an adventure.

Driving to the trail was mostly curvy back roads, once we got about 10 miles from the trail we hit a dirt road, and at this point we had only hoped that we were going in the right direction. There were about 10 cars at the trail head, so to me that seemed promising. I had read that the trail was only about 3 miles. 3 miles! I run 3 miles a couple times a week, how hard could it be? Oh I was so wrong. Continue reading “3 Sisters Waterfall Trail”

The Best Day

We are getting MARRIED!!!

I arrived in California late Thursday night May 19th. We woke up early Saturday morning and Zach told me that he had something planned, but I wasn’t sure what it was. The ride to wherever we were going seemed like forever, and the only thing I knew was that we were headed north. We arrived to a helicopter pad in Long Beach, CA, around 10:30, and at this point I knew that we were headed to Catalina Island.

Funny story, early that morning I showed Zach that my Facebook memories showed that we went to Catalina Island on that exact day 7 years early! Our high school senior trip was to Los Angeles. We spend about 6 days visit many of the main tourist locations, and on that particular day our class took a ferry to Catalina Island where we spent the day. Zach and I went biking around the island and parasailing. He went snorkeling while while I rented a golf cart with friends and rode around the island. I had always hoped that Zach and I would travel back to the island together… little did I know that it would happen during this trip.

Adventures in Cali…

A month ago I made my first trip to see Zach since he moved to San Diego, California. This wasn’t my first trip to Cali, but it was my first trip specifically to San Diego. Have you ever heard people talking about how great California is? Yep, they’re right. It’s absolutely amazing. The weather, the atmosphere, the location… all great! 10 days in Cali, here I come.

The trip started out disastrous. My flight out of ILM was scheduled to leave at 5:30pm on Thursday, and I didn’t leave until 3:30pm on Friday. I finally got in around 8:40pm which was 11:40pm EST. I was exhausted, however I woke up around 7:30 to go for a 4 mile run. Zach told me that he lived a few blocks from the beach. I set out to go find it. I faintly remember the previous night him telling the main road that leads to the beach. I made it about 1/2 a mile when I decided to ask a stranger the direction to the beach… well it was 180 degrees the opposite direction. Eureka! I made it to the beach, and sure enough it was almost a mile from Zach’s house. This was the view…

Running Bucket List

I’ve only been running a few years, but after talking with other runners and doing my own research, I’ve slowly started a running bucket list. I never thought that I would have a bucket list for running, but here it is:

Half Marathon Bucket List: In no particular order

Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville I would love to run this race, because it is in my hometown. Running through downtown Nashville would be amazing.636239628274741609-RnR-MarathonSeriesLogo-Stacked.png

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas I have been to Vegas before, but I would love to run down the strip at night! The city that never sleeps, I can only imagine how tiring it would be to wait around all day to run a 1/2 marathon at night!! Sounds fun to me!

United Airlines Guam Marathon Since Zach will eventually be moving to Guam, I started looking at running clubs and races. Guam is very, very, TINY. I would love to do the 1/2 marathon for this particular race.

United Airlines New York City Half Marathon I’ve only been to New York once, and it was only for about 8 hours. I was mesmerized. I think that this would be a fun way to see the city, plus you get to run through Central Park!!

Marathon Bucket List. As far as Marathons go… I’ll be lucky if I can even run one.

Marine Corps Marathon– I feel like this might be one of the most well known races in the U.S. Can you imagine how invigorating it must be to run through our Nation’s Capital? Unfortunately the race entry is through a lottery, but hopefully I’ll be lucky enough to get it some day.

Walt Disney World Marathon– I’ve already run 2 Disney races, but I would love to run the race that started it all! This race is always a few days before my birthday in January, and this would be an awesome birthday gift to myself. rundisney-logo

I’m sure as time goes on I will add a few more races to my bucket list, but I think this is a good start! What are your favorite races? Are there any I should add to my list?

Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon

Training? What training?

This past weekend I ran my 5th 1/2 marathon. Yes, 5! I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever run one 1/2 marathon, and now I’ve completed five.

Every time I sign up for a race, I always tell myself that I’m going to train and get serious about it… yeah that never happens. I felt that I was properly training for this race, up until Christmas and New Years, and that’s when I took about 2 weeks off of running. I got back into training and stepped it up, and then took another week and a half off for Zach’s Winging ceremony. The race seemed to creep up so fast. It was here before I realized it. I Continue reading “Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon”

Zach’s Winging

As most people know my boyfriend is in the Navy. He recently finished flight school and received his wings. The week and weekend of his winging was amazing and very busy. I thought I would give a summary of what the week consisted of…either for myself to be able to look back and remember, or for others about to experience the same thing and wondering what they should expect.

Wednesday. My flight to Pensacola was disastrous and I barely made it to his soft patch winging which was on a Wednesday. The soft patch wings go on the flight suit, and this was a small, informal ceremony for each individual squadron. Each flight student chose an instructor to present him with his soft patch, and usually the instructor told funny stories about the student.
